packet services - Investment & Finance Definition
Telecommunications services that enable customers to transmit large volumes of data in a secure and economical manner. Packet services are used for local area network interconnection, remote site, point of sale, and branch office communications. Technically speaking, packet services include frame relay, ATM (asynchronous transfer mode), and IP (Internet Protocol) connectivity services. Frame relay services are provided by telecommunications companies that connect local area networks to national or regional networks. Internet Protocol sends data from one computer to another on the Internet; each computer has at least one unique address.
