British film and stage actor and director. He is known for his interpretations of Shakespeare's characters, including Othello and Richard III, and won an Academy Award for his performance in Hamlet (1948). He was knighted in 1947 for his contributions to the theater and directed the National Theatre of Great Britain from 1962 to 1973.
