thalassemia ma·jor (māˈjər)
noun A usually fatal form of thalassemia appearing in infancy or childhood in which normal hemoglobin is absent, characterized by severe anemia, enlargement of the heart, liver, and spleen, and skeletal deformation. Also called Cooley's anemia.
