thal·as·se·mi·a (thălˌə-sēˈmē-ə)
noun Any of a group of inherited forms of anemia occurring chiefly among people of Mediterranean descent, caused by faulty synthesis of part of the hemoglobin molecule. Also called Mediterranean anemia.
