Rick·ett·si·a (rĭ-kĕtˈsē-ə)
noun A genus of gram-negative bacteria that are carried as parasites by many ticks, fleas, and lice and cause diseases such as typhus, scrub typhus, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
