neu·ro·sis (no͝o-rōˈsĭs)
noun pl. neu·ro·ses (-sēz) A psychological state characterized by excessive anxiety or insecurity, compensated for by various defense mechanisms and lacking evidence of neurologic or other organic disease. No longer used in psychiatric diagnosis.
