An acute infectious disease affecting children and young adults characterized by inflammation of the meninges of the brain and spinal cord, headache, vomiting, convulsions, stiff neck, light sensitivity, and purpuric eruptions, and caused by the meningococcus, Neisseria meningitidis. Also called cerebrospinal meningitis.
