noun An inflammatory disease caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi transmitted by ticks and characterized initially by a rash followed by flulike symptoms including fever, joint pain, and headache; if untreated, it can result in chronic arthritis and nerve and heart dysfunction.
