cho·lin·es·ter·ase (kōˌlə-nĕsˈtə-rāsˌ, -rāzˌ)

noun
An enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of choline esters chiefly at nerve terminals, where it hydrolyzes and inactivates acetylcholine. Also called acetylcholinesterase.
