ap·op·to·sis (ăpˌəp-tōˈsĭs, ăpˌə-tōˈ-)
noun A natural process of self-destruction in certain cells that is determined by the genes and can be initiated by a stimulus or by removal of a repressor agent. Also called programmed cell death.
