South African president (1994-1999) and Black political leader imprisoned for nearly 30 years for his antiapartheid activities. Released in 1990, he led the African National Congress in negotiating an end to apartheid. In 1993 he shared the Nobel Peace Prize. His former wife, Winnie (born c. 1936), also played a key role as a leader of the ANC.
