Makarios III
(mə-kărˈē-əs, -ōsˌ, mä-käˈrē-ôs) Originally Mikhail Khristodolou Mouskos. 1913-1977.
Cypriot prelate and politician. Bishop of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus (1950-1977), he supported the political unification of Cyprus and Greece and was the first president of independent Cyprus (1959-1977).
