pioneer of magazine publishing, Luce started Time
magazine in 1923, which was aimed at his contemporaries, people who were
college-educated and enjoying the Jazz Age. He also started Fortune, a business magazine, during the
Great Depression. Life, which
chronicled American life, was started in 1936. His final magazine was Sports Illustrated, which appeared in
1954.
