transfer agent definition - legal

n

An individual or business that keeps a record of all shareholders in a corporation by name, address, and number of shares owned. Not every stock transaction results in a transfer, because a considerable share of most issues is held in the street name in order to support margin or for the ownerÂ’s convenience.
