A per capita tax of a fixed
amount charged each person to register to vote, or to vote. Such a charge is
prohibited in federal elections by the Twenty-Fourth Amendment to the United
States Constitution. State laws requiring such fees have been ruled to violate
the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
