compounding a crime definition - legal

The offense committed by a victim of a crime when he or she fails to report or
prosecute the offender or agrees to hamper prosecution in exchange for a bribe,
act of atonement, or making of amends by the criminal. In some states, it is
not a crime if the victim agrees not to prosecute when the criminal returns
what was taken or pays remuneration to the victim for the injury or loss. See
