The chief legal officer of the United States or of a state, who advises the
federal or state government on legal matters, represents the federal or state
government in litigation, and heads the United States Department of Justice or
a stateÂ’s legal department. Abbreviated A.G. See also solicitor(s) general and United
States Attorney.
