Instinet - Investment & Finance Definition
An electronic network that facilitates trading in stocks for its clients, which are large institutions. Because the trading is done electronically, clients can trade stocks at any time. After regular market trading hours end, news reports will often say that a specific stock was “higher on Instinet.” Instinet has access to over 40 securities markets throughout the world. It also provides its clients with research conducted by its staff and third party organizations. Instinet is owned by Reuters Plc., which also owns Island ECN, a rival that it acquired on September 20, 2002. Island also owns ProTrader and Lynch, Jones & Ryan, which provide trading-related services.
