The
rule that a plaintiff cannot claim damages for negligent
infliction of emotional distress unless there has been some physical
impact, such as an assault. Example: a parent of a child injured in an auto
accident cannot recover for his/her own distress in seeing child physically
injured, unless parent also sustained own physical injury.
