Also, no call to. No requirement or reason for doing something, as in There was no call for your condescending suggestions; she knew quite well what to do. This idiom, first recorded in 1779, uses call in the sense of “duty” or “need.” The variant is always used with a verb, as in There was no call to get the police involved because it's a simple dispute between neighbors.
