Hayakawa

(hīˌə-kouˈə), S(amuel) I(chiye) 1906-1992.

Canadian-born American philologist, educator, and legislator. Noted for his writings on general semantics, such as Language in Action (1941), he was also president of San Francisco State College (1968-1973) and a U.S. senator from California (1977-1983).
