Uniform Resource Identifier

Uniform Resource Identifier definition - hacker
A global identifier for an Internet resource that could be local or remotely accessible. Whereas URLs, or Uniform Resource Locators, refer to network addresses having a protocol specification, a host name or address, and a local path, a URI, in contrast, does not always refer to a remote source. URIs follow the same general syntax as URLs, and URLs are one type of URI.
