Daemons

Daemons definition - hacker
Computer program running as a background process that performs some service for other computer programs. Typical daemons provide email, FTP, printing, telnet, and Web accessibility. The term is used mainly on UNIX and Linux systems. Daemons on Windows systems are called “services.”
