Boot Sector

Boot Sector definition - hacker
A master boot record, typically located on the initial or boot sector of the hard disk, is a tiny program that runs when a computer boots. To figure out which partition to use for booting, the master boot record starts the boot process by looking up the partition table. The boot process is furthered when it transfers program control to the boot sector of that partition.
