wildcat drilling definition - finance
An exploratory drilling program to locate natural gas or crude oil reserves in an area where no other reserves are known to exist. Wildcat drilling is risky and may result in a significant cost with no oil being found. A less risky drilling program is a development drilling program, which occurs in an area where reserves are known to exist.
