The former chief financial officer of WorldCom Inc., whose accounting machinations plunged the company into bankruptcy and resulted in his being indicted, in April 2003, on federal charges of defrauding banks out of billions of dollars that were given as loans. He was accused of lying to the banks when he attested to the accuracy of financial statements that the government has alleged were fraudulent.
