stock symbol definition - finance
A
unique identifying symbol assigned to publicly traded companies that makes it
easy to identify the company on stock tickers and online services. The symbol
also prevents confusion when entering trade orders into an electronic trading
system. Typically, New York Stock Exchange companies have two- or three-letter
symbols and NASDAQ companies have four- or five-letter symbols. The fifth
letter typically is added if the company is traded on the over-the-counter market.
