Sinclair, Upton definition - finance
A socialist who wrote books and wanted to end poverty. In an attempt to garner sympathy for the working class, he wrote The Jungle, a novel published in 1906 about conditions in the Chicago stockyards. The book brought him fame and outraged politicians who were appalled by the poor sanitary conditions in the slaughterhouses. The book prompted Congress to pass the Pure Food and Drug Act.
