An advocate for equal rights for black people in labor unions, he organized the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in 1925 and pursued a contract with the Pullman Co. for 12 years before achieving success. His actions led the United States to create wartime fair-employment commissions to reduce discrimination in the defense industry.
