The person or department that independently evaluates a companyÂ’s financial records to make certain that there are no mistakes or deliberate misstatements. The role of the internal auditor was strengthened through the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation in 2002. The legislation requires the internal auditor to report directly to the boardÂ’s internal audit committee, which is responsible for the corporationÂ’s audit.
