index of manufacturing activity definition - finance
A monthly report produced by the Institute for Supply Management that reports on manufacturing conditions. The index is updated each month and often includes revisions of the previous month’s data. For example, in December 2002 the index was at 55.2.  A level above 50 indicates that manufacturing activity is expanding, while a level below 50 means that the sector is contracting.
