gilts

gilts definition - finance
Bonds issued by the U.K. and Irish governments. The term comes from the original British government certificates, which had gilded edges. Gilts are considered risk-free investments because they are backed by the government. The term may include issues of local British authorities and some overseas public sector offerings.
