A central marketplace with established rules and regulations where buyers and sellers trade futures contracts and options on futures contracts. There are dozens of futures exchanges throughout the world that have been formed to trade specific futures contracts. Typically, a futures exchange trades about 10 to 20 different types of contracts. The futures exchanges are physical locations, many of which have open-outcry trading that takes place in a pit, and others that use computer systems.
