depletion account definition - finance
An account set up by a company to take charges against earnings as the amount of natural resources in reserves is depleted. Reserves may be oil, gas, metals, and timber, which are depleted over time. This is a non-cash charge but is charged against earnings to account for the decrease in the amount of the asset that the company owns.
