• national: It is in no way an expression of misguided national egotism.

• implicit: The authors refer to such preferences as implicit egotism.

• brutal: Would not ' brutal egotism ' also be unacceptable, to courtiers and a distinguished general, as obvious bad manners?

• mere: I think it is mere egotism, or impertinent at this time.

• personal: Clinging confusedly to this imposition on the majority is institutional and personal egotism for which there is no decent excuse.

• human: Let me mention just one other force that gets in the way of acting responsibly: human egotism.
