• code: If the type is ASCII or EBCDIC the filler byte is SP ( Space, ASCII code 32, EBCDIC code 64 ).

• character: At least all the EBCDIC characters exist in UNICODE.

• set: Rule 6: This rule excludes the use of an EBCDIC character set.

• system: Using CGI.pm gives excellent platform independence, including EBCDIC systems.

• page: Similarly, output for EBCDIC code page cp1047 is not available on ASCII based operating systems.

• document: This exception is only relevant for server-generated strings; and external EBCDIC documents are not expected to contain ASCII newline characters.
