Duisenberg, Willem F. Finance Definition
The first president of the European Central Bank
(ECB), selected in 1997. As of this printing, he planned to resign in July
2003. Duisenberg, who is Dutch, ran the Dutch central bank for 11 years before
becoming head of the ECB. He was a Dutch finance minister from 1973 to 1977. He
began his career as an economist and was on the staff at the International
Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C. He also taught at Amsterdam University.
