Free Online Latin Dictionary

Latin is the root of all Romance languages. However, despite being the precursor to languages such as French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian, use of Latin other than in the Roman Catholic Church and Vatican City is quickly diminishing. In fact, yourDictionary lists Latin on its "extinct and endangered" languages list.

The Latin language itself is split into two vernaculars. One is considered Classical Latin, which is the literary form and most often used today. The other is the Vulgar form, which was spoken by Roman soldiers and the people whose lands they conquered. Most Romantic languages came from the Vulgar form of Latin. Learning Latin can be difficult, as it is not emphasized in most schools. Using an online free dictionary can be of great help when trying to comprehend the ancient language.

Beyond learning the language for school or in a university setting, knowing Latin can increase knowledge of a person's native tongue language. Many words used today have Latin roots, suffixes, or prefixes.
