An A/V receiver that has built-in upconversion capability. If both the DVD player, A/V receiver and HDTV can upconvert signals, the one that should actually perform the operation is the one with the highest-quality circuits. Turning upconversion off and on in the various units is the only way to test the difference, which may be too subtle to determine. See upconvert and upconverting DVD.
