typesetting language

typesetting language definition - computer

A set of format codes embedded in a document that are used to instruct a printer or imagesetter (typesetter) how to print each character, line and paragraph. In the 1970s and 1980s, typesetting languages were considerably more sophisticated than the word processors of the time. Today, many word processing programs provide most, if not all, of the format codes used in typesetting languages. See XyWrite and TeX.
