traffic policing
Managing a traffic flow in order to comply with a traffic contract. It typically deals with eliminating bursts of traffic. For example, an OC-3 port (155 Mbps) on a switch can be limited to DS-3 (45 Mbps) traffic for an existing application. See traffic engineering and traffic contract.
