throughput definition - computer

The amount of work performed by a computer within a given time. It is a combination of internal processing speed, peripheral speeds (I/O) and the efficiency of the operating system, other system software and applications all working together. Transactions processed per second (TPS) is one metric commonly used to gauge throughput.
