task switching definition - computer

Switching between applications that have been loaded in memory. It generally refers to a user purposely jumping from one application to another, for example, by pressing Alt-Tab or Windows key-Tab in Windows. Task switching is also performed automatically by a multitasking operating system that continually switches the CPU from one background program to another.
