standards - Internet
One of the Internet's most significant contributions is that it drives worldwide standards. TCP/IP, HTML, SMTP, HTTP, FTP, POP, IMAP and so on are global standards that have become the glue that binds the world together electronically. Today, we have a global focal point for compatibility, which is a major improvement. See Internet Engineering Task Force and W3C.
