source code editor definition - computer

A text editor that is specialized for writing software. Large programs would be extremely difficult to write using a standard text editor. Source code editors provide cross references to all the elements within the program so that the programmer can quickly review where and how code is used throughout the program. Source Code Editors Know the Code

Source code editors identify the parts of a programming statement and can display them differently. In this example, the Source Insight editor from Source Dynamics (www.sourceinsight.com) displays the various components of the statement in different colors and font sizes to differentiate them.
