Project OXYGEN
An ambitious global network proposal that was supposed to link 78 countries with more than 100,000 miles of optical fiber (mostly under the sea) at a minimum transmission speed of 1.2 Gbps. Originally estimated to cost more than $10 billion for the trans-Atlantic segment, the project ran out of funding in 2000 and was never resurrected.
