primary partition definition - computer

The logical subdividing of a hard disk drive. On an x86 PC, there are four primary partitions, and one primary partition often occupies the entire disk volume. If there are multiple operating systems on the disk, each one is typically assigned to its own primary partition. See partition and extended partition.
