plug and hope
(1) Refers to attaching any peripheral to a computer with the hopes it will work correctly.
(2) Refers to the frustration of installing additional peripheral devices on DOS and Windows 3.x PCs back in the 1980s and early 1990s. The situation was mostly alleviated with the advent of the Plug and Play specification in the mid-1990s. See plug and tell, plug and play and how to install a PC peripheral.
