PICMG

PICMG definition - computer

An industry consortium that develops specifications for backplanes and interconnects for electronic equipment in the industrial and telecom fields. It was founded in 1994 as the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group, hence the acronym. PICMG defines the electrical and mechanical specifications for these hardware platforms, not the protocols used to transport signals over them.

PICMG's first specification was a PCI card and backplane that extended the PCI bus, only just appearing inside desktop PCs at that time, to the industrial world. It subsequently developed CompactPCI, AdvancedTCA and other technologies. For more information, visit www.picmg.org. See CompactPCI and AdvancedTCA.
