New.net definition - computer

(New.net, Inc., Sherman Oaks, CA, www.new.net) An organization that offers top level domains such as .shop, .inc, .family, .xxx, .travel, .law, .club, .tech, .med, .ltd, .sport and .mp3. The New.net domains are simulated, because behind the scenes, the new.net domain is appended to the name; for example, abc.shop becomes abc.shop.new.net.

Both ISP and user must cooperate in order to use a New.net domain. The ISPs must add software to their servers, and if users are not customers of that ISP, they must download a plug-in. According to the company, as of 2003, more than 174 million users were capable of using the New.net domains.
